By successfully completing this course, you will:

  • Gain mastery in applying the SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan) methodology specifically to pet chickens.
  • Deepen your understanding of the pharmacology related to avian medicine, including the legal restrictions of medications in poultry.
  • Enhance your knowledge of common diseases of backyard poultry.
  • Acquire insights into how avian physiology influences anaesthetic protocols and outcomes in chickens. 
  • Become familiar with common surgical problems in chickens. 

Modules

  1. Introduction to backyard poultry – breeds, husbandry & nutrition
  2. Clinical approach to the chicken – the physical exam, diagnostics, the use of medications, euthanasia, necropsy
  3. Common infectious diseases – respiratory infections, viral and fungal diseases, parasitism
  4. Common non- infectious diseases – reproductive disease, pododermatitis, wounds, etc.
  5. Anaesthesia and surgery – common surgical procedures

Who should enrol?

This course is suitable for qualified veterinarians. Student members are also welcome to enrol.
