David Phalen has been a practising veterinarian for over 30 years, having received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University in 1983 and a Doctor of Philosophy in infectious diseases of birds from Texas A&M University in 1992. He has been a Diplomat of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners Avian Specialty since 1997. He has also made over 300 local and international presentations to scientists, veterinarians, and bird and other exotic pet owners in Australia and worldwide. Clinically, he is particularly interested in haematology, cytology, imaging, pathology, and avicultural medicine.

David is involved in the AREPH as a consultant acknowledged for his expertise and experience in avian and exotic pet medicine. As Associate Professor Wildlife Health and Conservation, David contributes to the education of the next generation of veterinarians  through his teaching commitments to undergraduate and post graduate students at the University of Sydney.
