Basic Echocardiography Workshop

This small group workshop is designed to give you a basic understanding of small animal (dog and cat) echocardiography.

Major topics include ultrasound principles, normal cardiac anatomy and physiology, techniques for achieving quality 2D and M-mode images and results, case presentations of important diseases / emergency cases, and hands-on scanning of normal dogs. 

You will have the opportunity to practice in hands-on sessions with an experienced instructor, where individual coaching of how to obtain 2D and M-mode echocardiographic views and measurements taught in the lectures will be the main focus. 

Requirements: No prior experience or knowledge is required to participate in this workshop.

DVM PhD Dipl. ECVIM-CA (Cardiology)

Niek Beijerink graduated with a veterinary degree from Utrecht University in The Netherlands. He completed a PhD (canine endocrinology and reproduction) in 2007 and then a residency in Small Animal Cardiology in 2010. He is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology). In 2011 Niek commenced working as a Specialist in Small Animal Cardiology at Sydney University and is responsible for the clinical service and teaching in this area. Some of his active research interests are heart failure therapy, cardiac CT imaging, and stem cell therapy for heart disease. Niek is the tutor in the CVE Cardiorespiratory Medicine Distance Education course.

BVSc (Hons I) MVETSTUD Dipl. ECVIM-CA (Cardiology)

Geoff completed his undergraduate veterinary training at the University of Queensland. In 2012 Geoff completed a 1-year rotating internship at the University of Queensland Veterinary Teaching Hospital followed by a 3-year ECVIM approved cardiology residency training program at the University of Sydney Veterinary Teaching Hospital under the supervision of European-boarded cardiology specialist Dr Niek Beijerink. Early in 2017 Geoff successfully completed the examination to obtain Diplomate status in the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine – Companion Animals, in the subspecialty of Cardiology. Geoff has recently made the move to Melbourne to join Dr Richard Woolley in private practice as a mobile veterinary cardiologist.
