Immune-mediated disease - When the immune system goes haywire

The immune-system is a miraculous system but when it is hypersensitive, it can lead to a number of diseases. The course will review the mechanisms underlying the different hypersensitivity reactions as well common immunosuppressive/immunomodulatory drugs used in veterinary medicine. The course will focus on three of the most common immune mediated diseases which we see in practice, namely immune mediated Haemolytic Anaemia, Polyarthritis and Thrombocytopaenia and aims to help you confidently work up these tricky cases. 
 

Learning Outcomes

By successfully completing this course, you will:

  • Understand the mechanisms underlying the 4 different hypersensitivity reactions 
  • Be able to explain the mechanisms of action of common immunosuppressive/immunomodulatory drugs used in veterinary medicine 
  • Understand the criteria for the diagnosis of IMHA based on the 2019 ACVIM consensus statement 
  • Have an increased clinical index of suspicion for canine IMPA 5. List the differentials for thrombocytopaenia
