James Crowley
BVSc (Hons) GradDipEd FANZCVS DipECVS Registered Specialist in Small Animal Surgery
James graduated from the University of Sydney in 2012 and has since worked in small animal clinical practice and preclinical research, with a strong focus on surgery. After four years in general practice, he completed a rotating internship at the University of Sydney (2017), a specialist surgical internship at Murdoch University (2019), and a three-year small animal surgery residency at the Small Animal Specialist Hospital (2022–2024). In 2025, James successfully passed both the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) and Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Surgeons (ANZCVS) specialist examinations. James has been associated with the Surgical and Orthopaedic Research Laboratories (SORL) at UNSW Sydney since 2018, working as a veterinary surgeon, research fellow, and now PhD candidate focused on Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). Through SORL, he collaborates closely with veterinarians, biomechanical engineers, and human surgeons across multiple specialties to advance surgical research and innovation. James has published extensively in both veterinary and human peer-reviewed journals and has presented at national and international conferences. James is passionate about contributing to clinical research and is particularly interested in neurosurgery, fracture biomechanics, and minimally invasive surgical techniques. James continues his passion for teaching through ongoing involvement in veterinary education, including mentoring veterinary students, interns, residents and general practitioners, as well as supporting candidates preparing for ANZCVS Membership examinations. He has assisted with numerous continuing education workshops and practical training courses, and is committed to helping veterinarians build confidence and competence in surgical decision-making and technique.
