Delivered by the Camden Equine Centre, this two-day, demonstrative workshop is designed for veterinary practitioners with an interest in advanced equine reproductive technologies.
The program provides a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art in Ovum Pick-Up (OPU), Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), and in vitro fertilization (IVF) in horses. Participants will engage in collaborative discussions, gain practical insights, and network with leading professionals and peers in the field.
The first day features a series of concise, interactive presentations delivered by experts in equine reproduction. Topics include: OPU technique, mare selection criteria, sedation protocols, equipment selection and set up and oocyte physiology and handling followed by highly interactive discussions.
The second day is dedicated to hands-on learning through live demonstrations and practical sessions, including: OPU performed by experts, oocyte recovery from sudden death mares and oocyte search, classification and packaging for transport.

- Understand the principles and applications of Ovum Pick-Up (OPU) and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) in equine reproduction, including indications, benefits, and limitations.
- Evaluate the role of OPU/ICSI in advanced breeding programs, including donor mare management, embryo production, and genetic selection.
- Recognize and manage potential complications associated with OPU procedures.
Identify appropriate candidates for OPU procedures, considering mare reproductive history, ovarian status, and clinical goals.
- Understand basics of OPU technique, including equipment setup, probe handling, and safety protocols.
- Understand basic concepts of embryo vitrification and thawing
- Understand recipient mare selection and synchronization as key for embryo transfer of IVP embryos
- Apply best practices in oocyte selection, handling, packaging and transport, including media preparation, temperature control, and timing considerations.
- Discuss ethical and regulatory considerations in offering assisted reproductive technologies to clients.
What is a Workshop?
Highly practical - develop the confidence to implement your new skills on your return to work.
Practical workshops are an ideal way to build confidence and competence in your skills, as you put theory into practice.
Ideally balanced combination of theoretical and hands-on education, our workshops allow participants to obtain the most benefit possible through practical application of the skills being taught. Small group teaching with a high tutor to participant ratio will ensure that you benefit from individual attention from your highly regarded and experienced tutor/s. Nothing beats on-the-spot feedback as you learn a new procedure.
